Benefits
What are the benefits of a pool?
Health and wellbeing
A local aquatic facility would provide safe, year-round access to low-impact exercise, rehabilitation programs, and water safety education. It would also support mental health, social inclusion, and healthy ageing — all essential needs in a coastal community where access to safe swimming environments is limited.
Youth and families
At present, Denmark’s schools must bus students to Albany for swimming lessons, which takes valuable time away from learning and adds extra costs for schools and families. Families also make 104 km round trips for swim school outside school hours, spending hundreds of dollars annually on travel alone. Local lessons are seasonal, oversubscribed, and uncertified. A public pool would ensure every child in Denmark has equitable access to swim education and family recreation close to home.
Equity and liveability
Compared to other regional towns, Denmark is now an outlier. Narrogin, Manjimup, Esperance, and Margaret River all operate public aquatic centres, yet Denmark — despite being one of the fastest-growing regional towns in Western Australia — remains without one. Building a pool would close this gap, strengthen Denmark’s appeal as a place to live and work, and support both family retention and professional attraction.
Community burden today
Without a local pool, schools and families bear the logistical and financial load of swim education. This includes thousands of hours of lost classroom time, higher transport costs, and barriers for children in families without reliable transport. A Denmark facility would ease these pressures, enable more equitable participation, and support core education and safety goals.
Local economic contribution
The proposed aquatic centre is expected to generate close to $1 million annually in direct and indirect local economic benefits. It would create up to nine full-time equivalent jobs, support local suppliers and contractors, and retain household spending that currently flows to Albany. It would also provide youth employment opportunities, stimulate small business activity, and strengthen regional resilience.
Climate adaptation
As climate variability increases, the facility would also serve as an all-weather community hub. It would provide a safe indoor refuge during heatwaves, bushfires, and storms, while ensuring year-round access to recreation and exercise.
